Eye fatigue and computers: Computer vision syndrome

Computer vision syndrome is a set of ocular symptoms associated with the use of screens and monitors over a period of time. In most cases, the symptoms occur because the visual demands of the task exceed the individual's visual capabilities to perform it comfortably

When using a mobile phone, tablet or computer, our eyes will focus on the close-up, which causes prolonged close-up effort. This effort, when we focus on a certain point for several minutes, forces our eyes to make certain adjustments in order to maintain focus (accommodation fluctuations), as well as greater convergence, for example when we are reading. This is associated with a significant decrease in the blink rate, resulting in a change in the lubrication of the eye.

The most common symptoms include:

- Pain in or around the eyes;

- Dry eye or tearing;

- Eye irritation;

- Pruritus (itching);

- Eyelid weight;

- Blurred vision and altered focusing of images from near to far;

- Greater sensitivity to light;

- Headaches;

- Insomnia.

The need for diagnosis and treatment of vision problems is fundamental in order to relieve these symptoms. You should always see an ophthalmologist to evaluate possible associated diseases, correct any refractive errors (through the prescription of glasses, contact lenses or surgery), evaluate and treat convergence or accommodation disorders, or simply to prescribe eye drops to relieve some symptoms.

There are also some changes we can adopt in the use of screens and monitors, such as keeping screens and portable monitors (mobile phones, tablets, laptops) at a comfortable distance. There is no fixed rule for distance from the monitor. It is important that each person can see the distance at which they focus best with the correction they use, being in a comfortable position. If this is not possible, you should consult your ophthalmologist.

While using screens and monitors for prolonged periods, we should blink frequently and take breaks every 20 minutes, look at the horizon for 20 seconds and then resume fixation
